New Year Gala Concert

Geneva New Year celebration marks the beginning of the first
Chinese Cross Cultural Festival

On New Year’s Eve, award-winning Asian-American conductor Henry Cheng and Chinese pianist Byron Weixin Zhou combine their talents with the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra from Hungary to ring in 2019 with the first Chinese Cross Cultural Festival at Victoria Hall in Geneva, Switzerland.

For the Grand-Opening of the Festival on 31st December 2018, Cheng and Weixin Zhou chose an extensive repertoire of Strauss, Mozart, Ravel and Lehár, presented by the extraordinary Chinese baritone Changyong Liao, mezzo-soprano Andrea Edina Ulbrich and soprano Orsolya Sáfár.

Baritone Changyong Liao’s solo Chinese-Lieder recital takes place on 3rd January 2019. The finale concert takes place on 4th January 2019 with Milan’s La Scala Chamber Orchestra performing repertoire by Chopin and Mendelssohn, and the world premiere of Chinese composer Dingyi Zhang’s work “XIA”.

All three concerts will be led by Henry Cheng who has established himself as an internationally-acclaimed Asian-American conductor. The first prize winner of the Antal Dorati International Conducting Competition in November 2018 and the European Union Conductor’s Competition in January 2018, said:

“The Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra, La Scala and Byron and I have come together to commit to creating more opportunities for cultural exchange across Europe and the world, and in particular to discovering and supporting young musicians and artists from China.”

Cheng currently holds the position of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director at Klangkraft Orchester in Duisburg, Germany and as an educator, he has worked and developed programs with Cornell University, Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Bochumer Symphoniker and the Indiana University Beethoven Project.


New Year Gala Concert

To complete the festival ensemble, Shanghai born Byron Weixin Zhou, the representative of the 100th anniversary of piano history in China, was selected as the exclusive piano soloist.

The festival is the first of its kind and aims to support young Chinese artists and composers, and to introduce Chinese musicians to Europe and the world in a cross-cultural setting. As a travelling festival, next stops are set to include Nice, Paris, Budapest, Florence, Berlin and NYC.
